Quote of the Day

“I unite myself with all prayers to Almighty God, the merciful,”

-said Pope Francis, expressing solidarity with the 700 Muslims killed in Mecca (see below)

His Holiness, Pope Francis, spoke to Congress today – the first visit of the Pope to America’s elected body – and he urged them to take action on climate change, immigration as well to abolish the death penalty, and to keep the family strong. “It is my duty,” he said, “to build bridges and to help all men and women, in any way possible, to do the same. A good political leader is one who, with the interests of all in mind, seizes the moment in a spirit of openness and pragmatism.” He then skipped dinner with the Congress, and dined with 300 homeless people. Later he flew to NYC to give mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Today, he will speak at The United Nations. Read mas

700 dead in stampede at the Mecca
700 people were killed and another 900 were injured in a stampede during Hajj, the annual religious pilgrimage for Muslims in Saudi Arabia. The mass tragedy occurred at the “stoning the devil” ritual, where worshipers throw rocks at stone pillars to reenact the Prophet Abraham throwing stones at the devil. At 9:00 AM there was “a sudden surge in the crowd.” This kind of stampede has happened before. In 1990 1,460 were killed. The crowd bottlenecks in front of the pillars, and impatient visitors push forward. 251 people died in 2004. 363 people died in 2006. Read Mas

The far right of the GOP is trying a tactic, like the one in 2013 when they tried to de-fund Obamacare, to block federal funding to Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is accused of improperly selling fetus tissue. The organization said it was for research. President Obama will veto any bill that strips funding from Planned Parent. The temporary spending measure would expire on December 11. Read Mas
Trump and Ailes to meet, stare into each others eyes, pour hearts out
Presidential candidate Donald Trump, after publicly accusing Fox News of treating him unfairly, will meet with Roger Ailes, the head of the network, next week. Trump has taken shots at the networks biggest stars, Bill O’Reilly and Megyn Kelly. Several days ago Fox canceled Trump’s appearance on the O’Reilly factor after he, Trump, went on a Twitter rant. Trump’s campaign has attracted a great deal of attention because of his maverick and caustic personality.
